What could you recommend that would be great. Never been past Rome but have seen the highlights north of Rome. Is Amalfi coast to much for the time?>Was thinking about renting a car.....This would be in august.

One thing I would recommend would be Pompeii. It is a very unique experience.

Consider Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport city. It's like Pompeii, but much closer to Rome and without the crowds. Search this site for "Ostia" for more info. (Pompeii in August will be hotter than Hades.)
