Has anyone traveled to Tunis?

My husband and I are consider spending a few days in Tunis prior to our cruise leaving from Rome. Can anyone tell me if it is an expensive place to visit and safe? What do you recommend for an itinerary? Thanks in advance!!

I was just there earlier this week. Tunis and Tunisia are very cheap. Bolt is easily available in the cities though payment is in cash. Most rides I’ve taken are 4-5 USD. Hotels are relatively cheap. Since I had 2 days and 1 night to spend on my way back from Saudia Arabia, I rented a car and drove directly to El Jem (2nd largest coliseum in the world). Also checked out the small museum nearby - great mosaics.

Then drove to Kairouan and checked out the Casbah and the Great Mosque the next day after overnighting at the Kasbah hotel. Drove leisurely back to the airport the next afternoon and flew out. Driving was v easy on the highway- minimal tolls. Only in the center of towns does it get congested and requires a little more care.

This was my 4th time in Tunis and I’ve always felt very safe and no hassles including in the Medina of Tunis

Depending on how much time you have to spend, you can easily visit the Medina of Tunis - don’t let the crowds scare you - just plunge right in but obviously keep your money safe. Carthage is an easy Bolt ride from Tunis though the ruins aren’t that impressive compared to what you see in Algeria or Dougga. Sidi Bou Said is a picturesque white and blue town about 5-7 mins ride beyond Carthage that you should visit. Also, the world famous Bardo museum is in Tunis so you can easily visit that.

Note: I haven’t been to Dougga or Bulla Regina which is about 2 hours from Tunis or the Bardo - have left that for future visits

I’m currently in Tunis with an OAT tour. You could easily fill several days here. Our tour will spend four nights here before moving on and we are busy.

Today we wandered the central market and the Medina, and then spent half a day at the Bardo Museum which has a lot of spectacular items. Tomorrow we go to the ruins at Dougga and it sounds quite amazing.
