Please let me know your thoughts on Zaogli. We were thinking it might be a good home base for Portofino area and Cinque Terre area? Thanks!
Haven’t been there overnight but I have stopped for a beach day on my way back from Genoa to Florence. There is a pebble beach separated from the town by the railroad bridge. There is also a walk along the cliffs similar to Via dell’Amore in Riomaggiore.
My favorite town in the area was Moneglia, if you are interested to something closer to the Cinque Terre. But Zoagli is cute as well.
Hi Roberto, thank you for your comments. I believe you have mentioned Moneglia twice now. This is what I am thinking - we have seven days before we have to meet our friends in Venice. What do you think of this itinerary, and where would it make sense to ferry vs. train?
Night 1 - Flight to Italy
Night 2 - arrive in Rome, take the fast train to Pisa. We do not want to do Roma or Firenze, have been there before. We will get to Pisa late afternoon/early evening, so dinner and relax
Nigh 3 - Explore Pisa downtown/beach
Night 4/5 - Home base in Portovenere, explore this area on Day 4, and then on Day 5, explore Cinque Terre 5 villages. Hike early morning, maybe kayak/stand up board, beach, shop, eat
Night 6/7 - Home base in Moneglia or Rapallo area, go to La Funivia Rapallo-Montallegro, Hike, Santa Margharita, Portofino
Day 7 - Head to Venice in the morning
If you arrive at Pisa in the afternoon or early evening you’ll be able to see it all even before you go to bed. Therefore the next day, you can head straight to Liguria in the morning. There is no beach in Pisa and nearby Marina di Pisa is not a big deal. Just lots of American families of servicemen (and women) from the NATO base at Camp Darby next door.
Regarding having a base in Liguria, considering the distances are short, I don’t think you need to switch locations. Just choose one and stick with it. Portovenere is pretty but I’m sure you noticed it has no rail (La Spezia is the closest station) therefore I’d probably visit it, but not base myself there.
Anywhere along the coast would be a good base. If Cinque Terre is the focus of your visit, you may want to choose Monterosso, which handles crowds better (it’s larger). You can visit it all from Monterosso. Portofino is only one hour away and, in season, there is boat service all the way to Portovenere.
If you prefer to base yourself outside of the Cinque Terre and also want to visit Portofino, Camogli, Cinque Terre, etc. then choose a place central to all, like Moneglia or whatever town in between.
Hi All -
I think we are close to having our itinerary solidified! Question - if we are flying into Roma on Saturday morning, and then taking the train to Pisa via Firenze. Would it be better to stay in Firenze Saturday night (shorter train ride) than to stay in Pisa? Would it be feasible/easy to take the train on Sunday morning from Firenze to Pisa, stop and see the Leaning Tower, and then hop back on the train and make our way to Zoaglia? We decided to stay in Zoaglia because the accommodations were nicer and less expensive than Moneglia. Unfortunately, everything is booking fast and I couldn't find what I wanted in Moneglia. My concern is that we will have our luggage when we stop in Pisa, which will be no fun. Thanks! Michelle
stop and see the Leaning Tower, and then hop back on the train
a lot of people say that the Leaning Tower is a walk past - a drive by. See it, make a "push it up" pose for the camera and move on.
I happen to disagree, and you may find - or one of your party may find - that the Field of Miracles is much more interesting than that and that there is enough there to keep you occupied for a while.
I like all three buildings there - all quintessentially Pisan Tuscan in architecture. I think I was there for around 2 hours and didn't see everything I wanted to. That did include a very good caffé on the corner - 70 Eurocents - that I went back for another before I left.
