Has anyone flown from the US to IT via Canada on Air Canada?

We're looking at a fairly decent fare on Air Canada. Flying out of Denver, connecting in Toronto, and on to Rome. Coming back the same way. My question - would our luggage be checked through to Denver from Rome where we would clear customs in Denver? Or would we also have to collect them and clear Canadian Customs - even though we are only changing planes?

Thanks for your ideas!

Steve - Thanks! That's what I think too. Their fare beats Lufthansa by $500 each. We like to come right into Denver to clear customs. I've flown through other countries (Germany, Korea, Thailand) and never had to claim and recheck for customs. I never thought of using Air Canada!

yes, your bags will be checked through, but you have to claim them briefly, go through Canada customs, then put your bags back on the belt for connecting flights. See here:

Not a big deal, but it is one extra step. There is a recent thread where this was discussed, see here:

And returning through Toronto, you absolutely have to clear U.S. customs in Toronto. No exceptions. Apparently smaller airports don't do this, but all the major airports in Canada have U.S. customs onsite

Great link Nelly. Thanks! I would never have thought we'd do US customs in Candada.

That is true. When we flew Air Canada from Frankfort to Seattle via Vancouver B.C., we did US customs in Vancouver. What made it nice was that our family (who was picking us up) did not have to wait while we cleared customs in Seattle. We just walked off the plane and headed home. (Having used our layover time in Vancouver to clear customs) It is a great system!!
