Has anyone experienced St John's Festival day in Florence ?

We're wondering if this June 24th Festival is worth our backtracking to Florence for another night. Sounds fun with costumes, soccer games, boat races etc. This would allow us to take the fast train back to rome, but our other option is to take slow train from Siena to Rome with an overnight in or near Orvieto instead. Would love input please! Thanks.

We were in Florence for St. John's festival in 2001. Most of the city is without major fanfare. The traditional soccer tournament is in one particular area and usually very crowded. People were not walking around the city in costumes. The most impressive part of the day was the fireworks at night over the city. We had a great vantage point in the Bellosguardo area on the south side of the Arno. It was beautiful and did make for some great pictures.

Overall,I have never been to Orvieto and if I had to do it again I probably would opt to visit Orvieto instead.

If you want to get an idea of what the soccer tournament is like rent an old movie that takes place in Florence: A Light in the Piazza---yes it was a movie before being a Broadway play.
