Has anyone done this hike in Ortisei?

https://photoseek.photoshelter.com/image/I0000b10R4FNTVVo

I have had my heart set on this view for almost a year now, but cannot find much detailed information about the hike. This brief description says 12 miles, 2,000 feet of elevation gain and 5,000 feet (YIKES!) of elevation loss. Yet in other photos I see a couple with sneakers and no gear strolling along the trail. So perhaps there is another route or starting point?

I've done a lot of searching but can't come up with a map or more details about this hike. Any information about this hike, or any other favorites in the area, would be greatly appreciated. We will have 3 full days of hiking planned-probably 2 full days and one shorter, relaxing hike.

Thanks much,
Jennifer

Wow - that's a gorgeous photo and evidently quite a hike! I have the Kompass #076 map (Groeden, Seiser Alm, Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi), and I can find trail numbers 2 and 16 on it. The beautiful Vallunga appears to be a long valley coming back down into Selva from "up top." I can see one rifugio on trail #2, so there's a chance you could break up the hike by spending a night on the mountain. I hope you can find more info. The Selva tourist office could probably help. I had e-mail correspondence with the Ortisei tourist office prior to our trip in June this year and they were very helpful for my questions. In Santa Cristina we saw the tourist office person poring over hiking maps with some tourists. I think they're all very knowledgeable. Certainly worth a try.

Edited to add the tourist office contact info: [email protected]

Check Out Gillian Price's several Hiking Guides to the Dolomites.... Guess where.... of course. We found it very useful.

The instructions on the picture you posted are very clear , and self explanatory . Once you arrive at the seilbahn ( lift ) station in Ortisei , you will find very detailed information to guide you . As well , as you hike there will be numerous directional signposts . Here is the location in Ortisei - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Venice,+Metropolitan+City+of+Venice,+Italy/@46.5825246,11.6765541,14.31z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x477eb1daf1d63d89:0x7ba3c6f0bd92102f!8m2!3d45.4408474!4d12.3155151 and a website that might also be of use. Don't worry , keep dreaming , I'm envious - https://www.valgardena.it/en/ortisei/

This is not a difficult hike. The lift in Ortisei is 2 part. The first part to Furnes and then a larger cable car to Seceda. The view in the photo is seen as soon as you get off the lift at Seceda. We followed the trail eastward along the ridge to the Forc Pana where you can see over the mountains to the Val di Funes. We continued on to the Troier Hut for a great lunch and then followed the path to Col Raiser Hut and took another gondola down to Santa Christina. Bus back to Ortisei. As I said very easy hike. I did have hiking shoes (Merrell) and not sure if I needed them on this particular hike but on some of the trails we hiked there was some scree and I was happy to have them.

What Kathleen has described is the hike I would recommend. Not technical but very satisfying and NOT 12 miles!

I did something similar to Kathleen’s hike. I had lightweight easy spirit tennis shoes, but would have preferred my Keen sandals. They’d be fine for those trails. I was able to do that hike in the morning, stopped at Odles for lunch (which also has a great view), went back to Ortisei and took the gondola up to Alpi di Siusi and hiked back to the gondola down to wherever for the bus back to Bolzano. The point of all that is to say that if you use the lifts, that view could be your light hiking day.

Thank you all. This is great information. I know we could not do a 5,000 feet downhill stretch and was hoping for information about a different route. I think our hotel will have good hiking information, but since I was so fascinated by this picture, I wanted to make sure I had this hike figured out.
