Has anyone done the tour offered by the Vatican?

I'm trying to decide if we should do the tour offered by the Vatican or just wing it.

We have all downloaded Rick's audio guides of Italy to Ipods (I made them do it :-). Our group consists of 2 50+ year olds and 3 college kids. Will Rick's suffice or did you feel you got more out of it because of a tour? Thanks for your advice.

I've done it twice. The first time, the docent was very good and took her time to stop and do a show and tell. The second time, was every bit a "forced march" with the docent walking at breakneck speed through the crowd, losing participants along the way. It's a crap shoot. You may also look into a private tour company.
