Looking for the best places to homebase, one in Italy one in France. Suggestions, itinerary? We are thinking to stay in Rapallo, Italy and in Menton, France. We want to visit Monaco, Nice, etc. as well as Cinque Tierre, Portofino, etc. If you have any experience with planning something similar...I'm all ears.
Thanks!
Pam
Vernazza-4th visit and Menton-1st in Sept-have stayed in Nice and Antibes.
Mention looks like a great base and luv Vernazza.
Pam, I can comment to a limited degree. We have based in Menton and enjoyed it. It is attractive, sleepy and safe. The gardens were nice. We also based in nearby St Agnes on that same trip. A wise choice for a different, valley vibe. But in that overall area, my wife and I say 'move heaven and earth' to make the daytrip up to Saorges. For us, it was the highlight of that whole voyage.
As for Rapallo and that coast, we are this close to committing to snowbirding there this coming winter. We too have looked into Rapallo, but are now leaning more towards Camogli or more likely SML (Sta Maria Ligure). The latter is apparently larger and travelers have recently told us of the general advantages there, for self-caterers like us.
Our base in the Cinque Terre was Manarola and that worked fine.
Tante belle cose!
I am done. the end
Menton has always been my top choice on the French side of the border. In Liguria, on the Riviera di Levante (Eastern Riviera, I.e. East of Genoa) my favorite towns are (from west to east): Camogli, Sestri Levante, Moneglia, Bonassola, any village of the Cinque Terre, Porto Venere, Tellaro
I stayed in Santa Margherita Ligure, then later Nice years ago. I can't remember how many days I was in each place, maybe 4. From SML it was easy to visit Cinque Terre, Portofino and Porto Venere. I loved SML. It was such a relaxing vibe, although this was back when the crowds at CT weren't crazy, so it could be different now.
Thanks to everyone that has replied so far...all great information!
