Has anyone been to the Saracen Joust in Arezzo?

I've been trying to figure out which day of the week to visit Arezzo as a day-trip from Florence this June. Has anyone been to the Saracen Joust in Arezzo? If yes, I'm wondering if this a fun day to go or sort of a tourist crush. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Hi Andrea! I have been to La Giostra del Saracino in Arezzo! I lived in Arezzo last fall and have family there. I would definitely recommend going if you have the chance. Be aware that you should purchase your tickets ahead of time. And I would suggest purchasing tickets for the stands, not standing room on the ground. The ground is where the craziest, rowdiest fans stand and you'll be safer and cooler in the stands. Although the definitely attracts some tourists, the event is really huge to the locals. Generations of families have lived in the same quartiere (neighborhood) and cheer for that certain one. The weeks leading up to the joust are full of partying and communal dinners. It is a cool event to witness and experience. Head to the Duomo, the main cathedral, after the joust is over to see the golden lance (officially) handed over to the winning quartiere. Sometimes the winning horse even gets to enter the church! Please message me if you have any questions about the joust or about Arezzo! Arezzo is an easy, direct one hour train ride from Florence (on the regional veloce trains for about six euro each way). From the train ride it is an easy walk (about 15-20 minutes but not hard) to the Piazza Grande where the joust is held. Plus while heading to the joust you can visit one of my favorite gelato shops, right on the main street - Corso Italia, named Cremi. Try the cremino!
