Handicap lodging in Italy

We are two couples wanting to stay in Lucca, Amalfi area, and in Western Sicily. Our travelling companion is an older gentleman and has an artificial leg - he cannot use a tub, only a shower and must either have an elevator or very few wide steps. I would appreciate any lead you can give me. I am aware that Italy is famous for it's hills and cobblestone streets, but that's another issue.
Thanks, Sara

Have you review the comments on this site under -- DIVERSE TRAVELERS -- Accessible Europe. That might provide some better direction than this question and answer site.

For our personal experience with mostly 3 star hotels showers are very common and bath tubs are rare. Most hotels will have elevators from the lobby to the rooms BUT -- and this a big but -- many of the smaller hotel's lobbies are a half a story above ground level requiring a number steps just to get to the lobby and elevator.

Much of Europe is not terrible friendly to those with mobility problems. We are in good health but approaching our late 60s and have become more aware of these potential problems as we travel.

When booking the hotel you need to ask very specific question and make sure they understand you needs. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Actually, you were a great help - I hadn't noticed the Diverse Travelers section!
