half-day bus tours

We have a short 2-day visit to Rome, and would like to get a nice bus tour that hits the highlights, maybe even a hop-on/hop-off tour.
Any suggestions, and if these can be booked ahead online?

Rome has several hop on/off buses with different routes. No need to book in advance. Pick the schedule you like. All start in the plaza in front of Termini.

Another option?

I'm not a fan of Rome's hoho's as they get lukewarm reviews at best, and see quite a lot of complaints about them being too full to pick up new passengers at the stops, having broken equipment, being stuck in traffic, etc. They also will not be dropping you off right "at" some of the highlights as the streets are too narrow for the buses to travel in.

If you don't have mobility problems, a walking tour of Rome may be a much better option as you'll not just see some of the highlights but have them explained as well, and some of the better tours will get you directly inside those with the longest ticket queues - thus saving you a lot of time. As your visit is so short, this could be a very large benefit to consider.

Yes, there are other ways to get around the ticket problem but having that all wrapped up in one package - versus ordering tickets individually - might be nice? I haven't done this one myself but the Walks Of Italy tours are mentioned again and again by RS members as providing quality experiences. Their "Rome in a day" walk is not inexpensive but the tradeoff is being able to quickly get inside some of the most-visited attractions - tickets are included - and interesting narration of what you're looking at.

Other RS folks may have some good suggestions for walking tours as well. Rome is so much better experienced from one's feet instead of behind a window or top of a bus, and you may make far better use of the very short time you have with an experienced 'shepherd'?
