Due to recent eruptions, guides that take tourists to Mt. Etna have been told to either stay away or are extremely limited as to what they can do. Because of that, they have gone on strike.

I’m going on a tour to Sicily next month that includes a visit to Etna. But frankly, if that’s canceled, I couldn’t care less, as long as any volcanic activity doesn’t otherwise affect the trip (such as flights). I’ve seen volcanoes elsewhere and that is not what interests me about Sicily.
two springs ago we visited there.
We had a car. The farmer we stayed with (2-3 nights) loaned us his large scale map, showed us a ski area on the west-northwest side and said that's where they go to for the sights. It is possible to pay for a ride up very high. We just walked up for an hour, roamed a bit of the lava flows and then walked down and left.
On the way to that ski area, we stopped a few times when we saw some unique sites.
In one case, there was a cave in a lava flow (now a forested region) which we could climb down into ....
As we were there, a paid tour group stopped for their visit per an itinerary - having the car and flexibility paid off for us.
