Guides for Pompeii

Hello Lovers of Italy!

We are arriving in Naples on September 24 for a week’s stay on the Amalfi coast. On the way we will stop in Pompeii and my friends tell me that the best way to see it is with a guide, but they don’t have any recommendations.

Does anyone know of a good guide for Pompeii?

Also, we will be staying in Sorrento and doing day trips to Positano, Ravela, Amalfi and any other destinations on the coast that the forum members would recommend. Can anyone recommend a company to go with for a boat ride to see the coast from the sea, and a cooking class?

Prego!

Our tour was booked through The Roman Guy, but they arranged for a local guide for Pompeii, Sasha Bianco, and he was excellent. He grew up immersed in Pompeii, as his father and uncle were also guides there.

Here is his contact info: [email protected] or [email protected]

We were pleased with our private tour with Gaetano Manfredi. https://www.pompeiitourguide.com/ ‘Twas a tad pricey, but again, we were pleased.

Take a look at Trip Advisor for some additional recommendations.

Also, RS has a deal for a shared group tour. https://www.sharedtours.com/

If you can spend time in the Archaeological Museum in Naples in advance, I think you will be pleased and enjoy Pompeii more. FYI, there is an RS Audioguide to the Museum that we enjoyed during our tour of it.

There are a number of guides available at the entrance. Engage them in a little bit of conversation to judge the quality of their English. They will establish a fee for what you want to see. There were 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids). We figured we could handle about three hours and asked for a good overview of the highlights. Our idea was to get a good handle on the place and then return if we want to explore an area in greater detail. Worked well. We ended at the refreshment bar/restrooms around 12.30. Had a little snack and the rest of the afternoon looking both new areas and old.

When you got to the Isle of Capri be sure to take the chair lift to the top. Outstanding views and picture opportunities. Safe travels.

In case people don’t know, all the guides at the entrances are licensed by the Italian government. They display their licenses around their necks. We hired one on the spot at Herculaneum. She was excellent.

For those who hired at the gate of Pompei, is there a set price or do they each quote different prices? About how much did you pay?

The only reason you need a guide if you have done any homework or have a good guidebook is that they have keys for entry to buildings that you could not otherwise see. We tagged along when a guide opened a building and so got to see it -- but that was luck -- it is probably worth it to hire one of the guides at the gate to get access to interiors.
