We're looking for a great, guided wine tour near Montepulciano (with a DRIVER) during our stay this fall. Ideally, we'd like to visit a couple of vinyards/wineries & sample some local wines. Any recommendations?
The agrotourism we stayed at had brochures and even booked the tour for us. I think the quality is similar for most of these. We got a van ride, in a group of 8. Some brochures were advertising a bus. When our son was in Italy the villa he stayed at also had vineyards and their own wine tasting tour. For ours we were picked up at 1PM and spent 7 hrs with the group. In that time we went to two vineyards. They brought out certain wines and crackers/breads. Then they brought out order forms to order and if desired have items shipped home. It was nice we got to taste wine and not drive but we spent quite a bit of time in the van and got a little tired of the drivers jokes, etc. Perhaps the best was when the next day my husband and I were out driving and came across a gorgeous place called Rocca delle Macie. Their wine store was open and the clerk took out many bottles and let us taste the ones we chose. Plus we could purchase bottles without any tour markup. Of course I did all the tasting since my husband was driving:). You can stay at the vineyards also. Tour guides will give great explanations also.
If you will be staying IN Montepulciano, you don't need a car OR a driver. You can bounce from one winery to another all day long on foot. Of course, there are no vineyards, but there are sure plenty of wineries!
