Guide Services for Pompeii

Four of us (adults) will be staying in Sorrento, October 11-14, 2020. We would like to look into hiring a guide for the visit to Pompeii. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone that they liked? Also, did anyone travel by train or bus from Sorrento to Pompeii.

There are a bunch of guides hanging out at the entrance that will provide guided services. Generally charge by the hour and will do a tour to match your interests. There were four of us and we had very good guide for three hours. And we have always had good luck with hiring this type of guide. I generally engage them in a brief conversation about what they offer, pricing, etc., and I am primarily judging their spoken English.

We used Walks of Italy for an afternoon time and were the only two on the tour. It was great. We did give her a large tip and I’m guessing she only declared part of it. At least that was our hope.

We did. By Circumvesuviana train. Very easy and very cheap. It's a battered, unlovely thing but gets the job done, and the locals use it too. You want to get off at Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri station, right in front of the main entrance to the site.

Editing to add: buy your return tickets back to Sorrento at the same time you buy your tickets to Pompeii. Don't forget to validate those tickets before boarding the train to the excavation and boarding it to come back to Sorrento! Checks are not uncommon on the Circ route from Naples to Sorrento, and fines are high if caught with unstamped tickets.

We did it ourselves last month. Easy peasy. Just take the brand new specially designated bus from City Sightseeing Buses, buy your tickets at the entrance and use either Rick's audio app or the tour of Pompeii in his book. We follow his advice and rip out the relevant sections so we don't carry the whole book. Very easy to find your way around. You don't need a guide.
