Wondering if anyone can suggest a guide to cover the two places we'd like to see.
Did you mean a guide or a guidebook?
Cindy, My question is the same as Kent. Are you looking for a Guidebook or a "live" Guide? If you're looking for a Guidebook, you might have a look at the Rome Pocket Guide, which is relatively new.
A Guide- not guide book.
Rich Brunn is stellar. I've used him for my groups a number of times. His website is:http://www.rome-day-tours.com/ His prices are reasonable.
We took an organized tour with Through Eternity of the Forum/Colloseum & then of the Palatine Hill. We had the same tour guide for both tours & we were the only ones on the Palatine Hill tour therefore it was like having our own private guide. The guide was an American now living in Rome & she was excellent. Through Eternity is a reputable company and I highly recommend them. I believe you can also hire a private guide from Through Eternity but if they offer an organized tour that interests you, it would be a lot less expensive than paying for a private guide.
Cindy, I would highly recommend Francesca Caruso for a local Guide. She's exceptional and has an incredible knowledge. She's very popular, so pre-booking would be a really good idea. Contact information is in the Guidebook.
