Hi Kym,
It is customary to tip tour guides, but as with all tips, it's not necessary! For a, say, 2.5-hour group tour, 10 to 20 Euros is the normal range, if you do give a tip. On all-day private tours, though, it's even more likely that a tour guide will receive a tip. It can range anywhere from a half hour to two hours of work (or lower, or higher), depending, again, on how much you enjoyed the service. See how you feel after the tour.
