Guidance Needed!

Hello, all!

This is my first post here. I am planning a solo getaway to Italy next February during the off season for some solitary exploring. This will be my 3rd time in Italy, but my first time going alone. I think so far the research I have done and the plans I have made seem pretty cohesive (at least to me).

  • I intend on flying into Rome where I will be staying from 2/16-2/18.
  • On 2/18, my plan is to leave via train for Bari where I will catch another train to Matera. My intention is to stay in Matera from 2/18-2/20.
  • Here's where things get tricky. On 2/20, my plan is to leave Matera for Salerno where I will either taxi or take a bus to Positano from 2/20-2/22. I haven't been able to find a clearcut method of travel from Matera to Salerno that makes sense. My ultimate goal is to train travel as much as possible. Is there a method of travel (preferably train) from Matera to Salerno that anyone would recommend?
    • Finally, on 2/22, I will take the train from Salerno back to Rome where I will ultimately depart back to the United States the following day.

Any thoughts on these plans? I would greatly appreciate feedback. Thank you!

I found a bus to go from Matera to Naples....and then another one Naples to Salerno. Looks like a really nice bus & cheap. 3.50 euro

Not a lot of options for time so you may have to stay in Naples a night

Everyone picks their own itinerary which is good! Just wondering if you are aware of all that is in the Puglia region that is SO close to your first train stop in Bari - the trulli, the white towns, beautiful coastal region, etc. It's great that you have posted your itinerary early, so there is plenty of time to modify it if something else begins to appeal more to you.

While you are in Salerno, Paestum's wonderful Greek temple ruins are a short train ride from there.
