Has anyone been to either or these towns? If so, which do you like for a group of artists to spend a partial day (rest of day in Assisi). Thanks for any descriptions or suggestions you can give.
I've been to both, and it's a difficult choice. For a half-day trip, Spello is much closer. Spello also has a festival called Spello Infiorita, and all the residents of the town decorate their houses with flowering plants. Gubbio has a little more variety, but it is farther away and will take more time to get there and back.
Have been to both of these places and enjoyed them both but as Zoe posted above Spello is much closer to Assisi than Gubbio. We visited them on a trip in 2007 and were staying at an agriturismo about a km outside of Assisi. Spello was just a short drive for us and was good for spending part of a day but it did take awhile to get to Gubbio. We spent the entire day here taking the 2 person basket lift up to the top of the hill. My recommendation would be go to Spello.
