Ground transportation from cruise port in Ravenna to Venice Piazza Roma or close by

Four of us are ending our cruise in Ravenna in May 2022 and then going on to Venice for a few nights. I am looking for advice on ground transportation from Ravenna to Venice (Piazza Roma or close by). Don't want to rent a car. Any driver/guide to recommend?

I don't know your cruise, and you didn't give the port hours (or whether it's a Tender Port.) But the ship will leave without you if you are late. I recommend that you PAY for the ship excursion, because then lateness is their problem. This port is too far from Venice. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I can't change the facts.

It sounds like the OP is looking for transport FROM the port in Ravenna TO Venice, so no worry about missing the ship. But, OP, are you staying a night or longer in Venice, trying to catch a same-day flight or traveling onward to another part of Italy?

I don't know whether Ravenna is just one or many ports on your cruise or is the termination point. If the latter, you need only get yourself from the port to the Ravenna train station. From there you can take the train to Venice, I believe always with a change in Ferrara. There's one route per hour in the morning (there are gaps in the afternoon) taking about 3 hours; other options take longer. You can check schedules and fares on the Trenitalia website. Your destination will be Venezia S. Lucia.

If Ravenna is just a mid-cruise port call, I can only recommend that you stay in Ravenna and enjoy its pretty historical center and mind-blowing Byzantine-style mosaics. There's definitely enough to see in Ravenna to fill a day.

Ravenna is the end port on our cruise and we are staying in Venice a few nights afterwards. Taking the train from Ravenna to Venice is one option. Thank you. Any other suggestions?

I'm sure you could hire a private driver/taxi, but that wouldn't be cheap. It's 141 miles, and you'd be paying for the driver's time and mileage in both directions. And it wouldn't be much faster than the train. The driver wouldn't be able to get you any closer to your Venice hotel than a train can, there being no streets in Venice.

If you go to trenitala.com, you can input Ravenna to Venezia S. Lucia and get the train information. It looks like it is about a 3 hour trip.

If you go to rome to rio, it will give you several options as well as leads on private transfers.

You don't mention if you have checked with your cruise line about transfers. My guess is that they have this service available and it might be worth a phone call to the cruise line or your travel agent to see what options are available through the cruise line.

This is the beginning of cruise ships not being allowed to dock in Venice, protecting the city. A lot of them are going into Ravenna.

The cruise line does not offer some sort of transport to Venice ? ( probably at an additional cost)

Taxi to Ravenna then train to Venice will be your easiest/least expensive option unless you have a lot of luggage and don’t want to travel by train
OR
You could check mydaytrip.com to see what cost would be if they offer service there

Another often mentioned here for transport in other areas is suntransfers.com

Would be a shame to be so near Ravenna mosaics and not stop to see them

Thank you for your advice. The Cruiseline only offers a transfer to the airport in Venice for a fee. I thought about taking that and then a water taxi to our hotel stop. Don’t mind the train either. Thank you for the private transfer leads as well. I agree about taking some time in Ravenna to enjoy the mosaics but would need to find storage for some luggage if we do. Interesting idea!

A private water taxi from the airport to Venice will cost over 100 euros, so that would be my last choice. Other options are a vaporetto (public boat, the equivalent of a bus in the watery world of Venice) and a bus to the edge of Venice, from which you could proceed on foot or by vaporetto. Since there are four of you, a water taxi might not be such a crazy idea (depending partly on how far your hotel is from the bus station), but I imagine the cost could end up closer to 150 euros (I see ranges online).

Having spent 2 nights in Ravenna so I could have the day between to see the mosaics, I can't imagine being there and not visiting them. Here's the UNESCO link to why, in case you're not familiar with their significance and beauty: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/788/

Be sure to click on the gallery. As good as the pictures are, they are no substitute for seeing the mosaics and being in the buildings where they are in person. The main ones are close to each other and easily walkable, even from the train station. I hope you're able to make time to see them.

As others have described, taking the train from Ravenna to Venice is straightforward. It terminates at the Santa Lucia station next to where you each can easily get a vaporetto pass for your days there. You walk out the front of the station, turn right and there is a ramp you can roll your luggage down to the kiosks where you buy the passes. Individual tickets are very pricey, so passes are better for your time there.

I spent 5 nights in Venice in 2017 and used my pass a lot, partly to avoid walking from my apartment on Fondamente Nove right on the Lagoon and across from San Michele cemetery island, but mostly for fun. I loved seeing people on the vaporettos with their dogs or carrying a new lamp home.

I bought my vaporetto pass upon arrival, but I got my Trenitalia Ravenna--Venice train ticket from home in advance at a very reasonable price.

I've been impressed by my arrival in many places, but coming out of Santa Lucia and seeing the city across the water is absolutely breathtaking.

Celebrity booked up all the private limos on May 16th. We are staying in Venice for a few days too. Train and bus are sketchy. One bus a day. Train also limited. Just booked a water taxi from port pier to downtown Venice thru VIATOR.COM. Less than $180 for two! Limos if available were $235 a person.

Maybe see you on the Constellation?

There are trains from Ravenna to Bologna almost hourly then from Bologna to Venice many fast and regional trains all day

I’d make absolutely sure that “water taxi” is actually from Ravenna cruise port
Seems pretty cheap for such a distance

I have sent a private message to GColeman. I also worry that there may be some sort of misunderstanding about his/her arrangements.
