Heading to Venice on my first ever Rick Steves' tour. Should I prepay airport to hotel transfer, or just wait until I get there?
I'm going to Venice in May and have researched this. Is your hotel in Venice or nearby on the mainland? An airport bus goes from Marco Polo airport to Piazzale Roma -- http://www.atvo.it It's about a 25 min. ride and about ten Euros each way. From Piazzale Roma you can either take a vaporetto or walk to your hotel, if it's in Venice proper. If you take the airport bus, there's a luggage compartment under the bus. If you take a city bus (which also goes to Mestre and other towns on the mainland), you have to schlep your suitcase on the bus with you. If you book a private water taxi from the airport to Venice proper, it's about 90 or 100 Euros.--Except, I just looked at Viator, which I have used in Rome on several occasions, and see that they have transfers for around 40 dollars http://www.viator.com/Venice-tours/Transfers-and-Ground-Transport/d522-g15?pref=02&aid=g3497 Also take a look at the "Reaching Venice" link on HelloVenezia http://www.hellovenezia.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=68&Itemid=127&lang=en You have choices, depending upon your hotel location and arrival/departure time!
Thanks! Ended up waiting until I reached VCE to buy the transport. And a good thing I did! I was all set to use the Alilaguna Orange line to reach my inner city hotel, but it turns out that line was "interrupted" by Carnevale events and wouldn't be stopping at my stop. So I bought a 24-hour Actv pass and just used the city bus to reach the city, and then cruised around on the vaporetto all afternoon after successfully reaching my hotel. Still have all morning to ride them as well before my RS tour convenes at 4PM. Best investment of 24 Euros I've made yet!
