Great Hotels located on a canal in Venice

We are planning a trip next year to Europe with a few days in Venice. I have Rick’s guidebook on Venice but didn’t find many hotels located on a canal. I’m wondering if anyone has recommendations for a hotel on a canal in an area where we can walk to much of the historical/popular sites? Thanks for your help

Do you mean on the Grand Canal? Or a quiet side canal? Or something in between?

For a very nice 4* hotel on a side canal, right near San Marco, try Hotel Splendid:

For a smaller, more modest 3* hotel on the Giudecca Canal, we liked La Calcina:

That one used to be in Rick’s book, but maybe no more? The Giudecca canal is the large canal that runs between Dorsoduro and Giudecca Island. It is a broad view across lots of water, not a small intimate view across a small back canal. But pleasing nonetheless if you enjoy gazing at water.

We’ve been twice to Venice and stayed both times at Hotel Antiche Figure. It’s a beautiful boutique hotel right across the Grand Canal from the train station. It’s so easy to arrive at the station, walk across one bridge, turn right and walk into the hotel. Walking to sites is fun and part of the magic of Venice. Have fun!

We stay at the Hotel Ai Mori D'Oriente, on the quiet back canals in Cannaregio. Great service and staff. Easy to take a sunset pix without anyone else in the frame. Have a great time!

I wasn’t set on any particular canal but the bit smaller ones do seem more what I was thinking. I appreciate everyone’s input on this. Thank you very much

Hotel Baglioni Luna is on a side canal near St Mark's Square. Hotel Ala is popular on this forum and is also near a side canal.

We just got back from Venice and enjoyed our stay at Residence Corte Grimani. Very close to St. Mark's Square. Only a few rooms have a view of small canal so make sure to put in a request.

Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo, right behind San Stae Church on the Grand Canal. We've stayed there a few times, going back again this September. The San Stae vaporetto stop is right out front, and it's very easy to walk around Venice from the hotel's location.

If you want something different, try Istituto San Guiseppe, a ‘convent stay’. Nice location on a canal midway between Rialto Bridge and St. Marks. I’m planning a second stay in a year. www.monasterystays.com
