I just saw a reference in one of the responses to the book -
Saving Italy : the race to rescue a nation's treasures from the Nazis
author : Robert M. Edsel.
It is a great read and gives you an idea of how close Italy and the world came to losing so many of the treasures we now travel to enjoy.
Thanks, Joni! I'll look it up.
Saving Italy is the companion book to The Monument Men. Italy's treasures were so great they took a separate book!
The first book was Rescuing Da Vinci - lots of photos, my favorite is how Michelangelo's David was encased in clay and brick (other sculptures, too).
Great book! There is a fantastic account of how close the world came to losing The Last Supper.
Joni, I'm about 25 pages from the end of the book, and I don't want it to end. What a great read. I'm eager for my DH to read it; he's more knowledgeable about WWII than I, and will get more out of it.
I was especially interested in - and surprised at - the German generals plotting to surrender to the Allies in Italy - for the good of the German people. Wow!
Thank you, thank you.
