I am renting a vehicle thru Europcar in Italy. If the car does not have a GPS, can I rent a GPS unit from Europcar?
it would probably be cheaper to buy your own GPS unit before traveling and put a Europe map on it. Add on GPS units to a car not already equipped with one are pricey.

Another consideration, no telling what language the GPS in the car could be set to. We got one set to German and it wasn't easy figuring out how to change it since none of the owners manual was in English either. Could eat up a lot of valuable vaca time. Cheaper and easier to bring your own.
I agree with Jim. I rented a car in Vienna and drove it Venice. I walked right by a store that sold GPS and then rented it through Europcar when I picked up the car. It would have been cheaper to buy the unit at the store I walked by. To make matters worse the unit I rented had out-of-date mapping. Very frustrating. We ended up using out cell phone maps (Google) more than the GPS unit.
On another occasion I rented a BMW in France and it only had a German nav system. It was fun figuring it out but there was no language option for English.
Buy one or consider using your cell phone.
Use your cell phone with an offline gps app like Sygic. Much, much cheaper than renting a gps and you do not need a data or cell phone connection once you have downloaded the maps at home.
gps very expensive. we used our iPhone and made sure to turn off the roaming afterwards so it would not charge us. we also used a great map we bought on-line "Touring Editore"-Italia road map. Saved us many times as the roads are easy but very easy to get lost.
