Gps for Bologna/Tuscany

We are leaving for Italy at the end of next week and need to do something about a GPS. We will be picking up our car when we leave Florence, traveling to Bologna, and Parma, then for 5 days in Tuscany. We have iPhones, but can not turn data on due to cost. Should we buy a Garmin/ TomTom? Is there such a thing as an iPhone app that we can use without data? I knw there is a TomTom app but I'm not clear from the description if it requires a data plan.... Thanks!

we bought a relatively inexpensive TomTom a few years ago. Definitely recommend bringing one! Be sure you have the Italy maps loaded into it before you go. When you park your car, play it safe and stuff it into the glovebox or trunk.

One other tip is to practice with it before you go. You don't want to be jet-lagged and trying to figure out how to use the darn thing! (you can guess how I know this)

You can rent a GPS with the car at major car rental places. A good road map can also do you, as negotiating Tuscany is easy.
When we stayed outside San Gimignano last year, we didn't even have a map and did just fine following road signs and taking direction notes off Mapquest and GoogleMaps.
