Got a traffic ticket in Florence....this was unexpected.

I was very careful to get all the necessary permissions to drive in the ZTL, but this does not involve the ZTL. I got a violation for "Circulating without respecting the direction imposed by traffic signs/road markings". If this is the case then every crazy Italian driver is guilty as sin. This allegedly occurred at the intersection of Via Della Scala (a one-way) and Viale Fratelli Rossellini (a two-way). We turned right, from Via Della Scala, onto Viale Fratelli Rossellini. We were never on the wrong side of the street; I think that I would recall such an infraction. In the letter that I received, there was no photo or other proof of the infraction. How am I supposed to send back a rebuttal when I have no idea what, if any, evidence there is to support their claim? I logged in to their website thinking that there might be a camera shot, but no evidence was found.

It's possible you turned on a red or turned right/left when it wasn't permitted. It could be anything. I don't know that you'll ever get any "proof" of the infraction other than the ticket you received. You might just want to let them know you are unaware of the infraction and ask for proof but I doubt you'll get anything other than a higher fine. donna

According to the web reference below, you should have 60 days to appeal. And you have to appeal in writing, in Italian. And the burden of proof is on you, not on the traffic authorities. And if your appeal is turned down, the fine is doubled. Sounds to me like a no-win situation. http://tinyurl.com/ltoc8e

It is my understanding that by the time you receive your big fine notice, your time to appeal has come and gone and you didn't even know about it. There are even provisions to appear in court like they can do here. But, you have to know about which you normally don't. By now, it's too late.

No doubt I will just suck it up and pay the fine. It's probably for not coming to a complete stop or a right on red, etc... Now, if I could just get served with the infraction that I was anticipating, which was a ZTL violation in Sorrento (guilty!). The rental company notified me that they had given information over to the authorities, but still no official word about the violation.
