We will be on a cruise throughout the Meditteranean from 3/7/10 to 3/28/10 then travelling all over Italy until 4/15/10. In trying to pack light, will layers suffice or will goosedown coats be necessary this time of year. We were in Italy once before from the latter part of Feb. to March 9th and it was freezing.
Thank you. Even though the goosedown had a water-proof exterior, we will do the layers.
I live in Calgary and don't own a down jacket. Layers always work best (especially for travel), in my opinion, even if it is -40 out.
Jon is correct. Goosedown is more than overkill especially for that time of year. The correct layered system can take you from above freezing to 20 below. Goosedown has no flexibility/
In addition to not having flexibility, goosedown has the added disadvantage, in the conditions you want to use it in, of losing its insulating ability if it gets wet, such as by rain. Many of the outer layers over down assume snow (too cold to rain) rather than rain, and a good rain can dampen the down.
We did fine with fleece and Gore-Tex layers during time of year-even along the coast.
