Will google maps be sufficient traveling through Tuscany, Umbria and up to lake Garda or do we need an actual old style atlas/map? Data charges are not an issue.

The only issues I can see with using Google maps is you might hit areas without a data signal. Make sure your device works as true GPS - directly from the GPS sats and not just as Assisted GPS which requires a data feed. I would also save the maps for the area to your device to use offline. Don't save them too soon before your trip as some devices delete them after a certain amount of time. Worst case - you stop & buy a map somewhere along your way.

Good idea to be able to use the map offline, we have hit spots where there was no way to access the internet.

Just in case, I print maps using via michlin for each leg of the journey.
