Good town as a base for walking in Tuscany in October

We are interested in staying in a relatively small town in Tuscany (not Siena - we will be there for a couple of days prior) that would be ideal as a base for a few day hikes where we could use a combination of walking and buses/taxis to visit other neighboring towns. We are most interested in the history and scenery of Tuscany. Any recommendations welcomed.

Most small towns in Tuscany require a car.

Look at Montepulciano. All Trails and Komoot have some itineraries in the area.

Editing to add I actually scoped out planning a week there in October this year and found enough to keep us engaged with walks as well as visiting nearby towns (Pienza, Montalcino) by bus, but we changed our plans. I hate renting cars so I found it is doable by public transportation but a car would make it easier.
