Good quick lunch near Termini

I will be arriving at Rome Termini station around 9:00 on the day two friends arrive at Fiumicino around 9:45. I suspect it will take them until at least 11:00 or later to get to the station. We will be leaving by train for Formia/Gaeta. Our lodging at Gaeta has check-in at 3, and is only 15 minutes from train station. I am trying to plan so the time is not wasted just waiting around. Is there a place nearby for a quick lunch between my friends arrivalat the station and the train to Gaeta? I would rather not eat in the train station. It looks like the Baths of Diocietian are open early, free and close by. Would that be a bit of sightseeing for me as I wait for them? Would it be best to walk or take the Metro one stop? I will have been in Rome 4 days already and we are coming back for 3 days. Of course planes are sometimes late so plans will have to be flexible and text communication necessary.

Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri is right on Piazza Republica and is worth a visit when you are in the area.

I have eaten at a place on the corner of via Volturno and via Solferino which is in front of Termini. Its basic and better then Termini food. If you are in front of Termini with your back to Termini it is all the way across Piazza Cinquecento in the right corner. Not certain of the name but it says Caffeteria on the awning and Pasticceria on the building.

I actually like Vyta, right in Termini on the main level, east end. Vyta is in several stations in Italy including Milano and Napoli. Great pastries, very fresh, and a variety of sandwiches that are easily taken along on the train . We frequently do this.

It's easy to walk to the baths and Santa Maria degli Angeli Palazzo Massimo is also right across the street and worth and hour or two of visiting.

Thanks, for suggestions so far. I am aware of the church but when I return to Rome. We will stay nearby and my friends will want to see the church.

I second the VyTa suggestion for lunch. Roma Termini and Milano Centrale have several good places to eat, not just normal train station fast food.

The sights Laurel recommends are very good, too. Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Prassede are a metro stop or two away, perhaps 10-15 minutes on foot.

That is three for Vyta. Actually have found the big train stations in Europe generally have pretty good and handy food. Since we generally stay in the Termini we have found a number of decent, quick food places just south of Termini. Trouble is, I don't remember the names. In the block south of Termini on a couple of the east/west streets you will find a number of small restaurants. Good luck.

The Chef Express Cafeteria on the main floor of Termini is terrific. It's huge and offers a wide variety of foods that changes for lunch and supper. The pasta station is separate from the second course station, there are lots of fresh fruit and salad dishes, and desserts too. Variety of beer in the cooler. I say it's worth checking out when you want home style meals and other than a sandwich, but you can make your own sandwich too if you like.

Right outside Termini is Er Buchetto Via del Viminale, 2F, in business since 1890 with lots of great reviews. Tiny, extremely casual and the best porcetta ever. Also right outside Termini and about 20 yards from Er Buchetto is National Roman Museum - Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Largo di Villa Peretti 67 . We spent about an hour and liked it a lot.
