My husband and I are stopping in Rome for only 3 nights on our way home from a visit to Turkey. it will be Easter weekend. What ideas are there to get out of town? We will have spent time in Rome already before we visit Turkey. This is mainly for respite. If you have ideas to miss a lot of the crowd and stay in Rome, let me know.
Orvieto - but I have no idea how Easter weekend will affect it. One hour by train from Rome. My wife and I spent 2 relaxing nights there last summer after visiting Rome, staying at Affittacamere Valentina (from RS guidebook). A good restaurant is Hostaria Posterula: I posted a review on the forum. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy-reviews/orvieto-excellent-restaurant-hostaria-posterula
Awesome idea. Thank you Jeff. I will look into it. It sounds like just what we need. I've never posted on this forum. Nice to see it works!!
Going to Rome during Easter sounds like you’d better have a place booked ASAP!
I loved Orvieto. I spent 2 weeks there back in 2015 because I was taking some Italian classes. It was my impression (I have no statistics to back it up) that it was a popular weekend destination for Italians. It may therefore be more crowded than average around Easter--and it is not exactly an undiscovered town to begin with. I'd still recommend it, but I don't want you to count on a quiet getaway with no other visitors in sight. The upper town (historic area) is rather large; it's not hard to walk away from the crowds and find quiet streets.
I've taken a quick look at booking.com, and it appears the holiday is driving up prices. There aren't a lot of rooms available, so I'd try to book something very soon. Be careful about location. In this situation, I'd want to be staying in the upper town. A lot of what's available now is down below or even a mile or two from town.
