Good car parking option for Monti area in Rome

I know the first reaction is don't have a car in Rome. I totally agree, but...

My initial thought was to pick up a car as I left either Milan or Venice and drop it when I arrived in Rome (then fly home from there). I couldn't find a decent flight option from Rome (decent meaning time including connections, most were pushing 29 hours, with a long connection that started at 9 or 10 at night in various cities). Best flight options available were round trip to/from Venice. So ended up picking up a car in Venice and will drop it in Venice when I get back.

Because of that, I'll have a car I don't need for six nights. This is Italy, the story doesn't end there. Second thought was to park well clear of Rome and train in. There's a general strike, however, the day I arrive in Rome. There are lots of closures (though it's never definitive what will or won't run).

So, plan C is to find parking as convenient as possible to the Monti neighborhood where we are staying. We do pack crazy light by most standards, so walking with bags isn't a big deal.

Please give me your suggestions. Points for convenience to get into (and out of) Rome as directly as possible, also points for secure parking (so the car is in one piece when we pick it up), points for not having to return periodically to pay a fee, and, of course, points for relatively easy walk to our lodging at Via Ariosto, 24, 00185 Roma.

Not overly interested in free places to park. I'd rather just pay for not worrying about the car while I'm enjoying Rome.

Thanks for your help,

Brad

I am surprised that there are better flight choices from Venice than Rome to "Florida"

Do you need a car at all?
Depending on what you want to visit, you might be able to do with trains only.

Not particularly helpful responses so far.

Why not turn the car in? The cost of the car would then be two one-way rentals, Venice to Rome and Rome to Venice, the cost would be significantly more than parking in or around Rome. Right now, the rental car is under $300 for 20 days (picking up after three nights in Venice then dropping off before a second stay in Venice and flying home). Did I mention train strikes is why I won't park the car well outside of Rome?

Do I need a car at all? Heck yes. I'll be visiting places outside of Rick's recommended itineraries. An example day would be, after staying in Perugia, leave Perugia in the morning, stop in San Leo in the morning (eat lunch), spend the afternoon in San Marino, end at lodging near Ravenna. It's less than four hours total driving time. Using public transportation, I'd be hard pressed to do that in two days or I'd skip most of it and try to get to Ravenna in a day (lodging would need to be in Ravenna city center rather than in a coastal town).

Well we asked. A lot of people come to this forum thinking that Europe is like the US, a country where without a car one is likely to die of starvation trying to reach point A from point B.

I’ve parked at the one below. I don’t know where exactly you are in Monti, but this is near Termini station and Termini isn’t far.

€20 a day.

Yes, I understand. My most recent trip was Berlin to Budapest (included Prague and Vienna) in May. Even though we visited some smaller towns in Czech Republic, public transportation worked fine.

For me a car is totally dependent on the itinerary. If I can get away without one, I will.

Never would have guessed a rental car could be had for less than $15 a day.

My apologies for not being helpful.

The good news is that your lodging is well out of the ZTL. It is also quite close to a highway access point (viale Castrense). So I would just aim to park as close to your lodging as possible, and as it turns out, the Best Western President has a parking garage right at Manzoni metro stop. If driving 3/4 mile on the streets of Rome is OK for you, that is what I would do!

And yes, car rental rates are crazy low in Italy this fall; I am going to Tuscany next week and have seen less than €15/day as well - I'm paying €30/day for a package with full insurance, which I'm very happy with.
