I was wondering what would be a good language App to download to my Iphone and bring with me on our trip this June. Thanks
Ispeak - Italian and Babelshot are the two I have
Thanks Cam, I will definitely look into both. I feel that they might come in handy just in case I am having difficulty communicating then I can type words or short sentences then have it translated out loud. It has that capability right?
sally, Are you aware that it's a really good idea to switch off the data roaming portion of your iPhone when travelling in Europe? Regarding typing in words or phrases and having translations provided by the iPhone, this is often not a practical method in reality. Many "locals" will quickly lose patience with that sort of thing. You'll probably find that many working in the tourist industry can function quite well in English. If you learn a few of the common "polite words", you should have no problems. Happy travels!
Ken, even if I have Verizon , I would still put it in an airplane mode. I would buy the App so it's in my phone even without wifi. It will work right as long as I have the App. You're right they'll lose patience but perhaps just for me to understand certain words and yes, I would learn some polite words . Thanks Ken.
I have found itranslate is great! and FREE!
Basic Italian for dummies is pretty good, and does not require an Internet connection, as most do
sally, Thanks for the clarification. As you're using Verizon, your phone won't work in GSM service areas. One point to mention is that if the phone is in "airplane mode", the Wi-Fi may not operate either. I'm not familiar with the App that you mentioned, but you'll need to check whether it's able to function in an "offline mode". Some App's require a net connection for full functionality, so you'll need to verify that. Cheers!
Just downloaded iTranslate as a free app but it does need an internet connection to function.
Ed, I-Hammer - LOL! Your reply is a bit more direct than my reference to the locals "losing patience".
English is so common that basic communication is no problem with a few polite phrases. what you will have trouble with is ordering in resteraunts and getting what you expect. Even the mistakes have been good though.
If somebody started talking/typing into a box and then shoved it in my face I'd have to show them my app: I-Hammer. What in the heck is wrong with learning the other guy's lingo??? More importantly, is this a first-trip thing or has anybody ever used one the second time out of the box?
