Decided to stay in this area instead of Trastevere as per recommendations on this forum. Can anyone recommend a hotel? Under 200.00 per night
Rick's guidebook (Italy 2016) lists several on pp. 946-949. They are almost all in the $$$ category, which is within your budget if you're looking for a single room. Some doubles are listed at 200.00 but others run more.
Thanks
I have the 2017. He has a lot in the termini area. Not much in Navona and Campo.
Try Hotel Smeraldo. Also Hotel Teatro Pace.
Many options in the Pantheon area, a couple of blocks from Piazza Navona.
Another vote for Hotel Smeraldo (Campo di Fiori area). I'm surprised it's not in Rick's book as I know he uses it often, and I've seen it reviewed several times here (that's why I chose it earlier this year when I was in Rome).
Bummer-both are sold out for my dates. I'll keep looking.
Thank you!
We really liked this place near Piazza Navona: http://www.residenzacanali.com/?lang=en I don't know your dates, but I think it's within your budget. You need to be willing to do stairs, since all rooms are up at least one floor and there is no elevator. Nice room, huge bathroom, lovely breakfast, friendly people.
hi Patricia-Luckily I do have my original reservation at San Francesco in the Trastevere area because this one too is sold out. I'll be in Rome the end of this month.
Pull up www.booking.com. Put a checkbox next to the neighborhood you're looking for and filter by price. Or use the map feature where you can locate all the hotels right on the map. You'll get more choices that way than a single guide book. Plus they'll have multiple reviews of each place.
We've not stayed at Hotel Due Torri which is close to Navona, but we have stayed at their sister Hotel Fontanella Borghese (near the Spanish Steps) many times and have always been pleased. Based on our experiences at Fontanella Borghese, we would not hesitate to stry at Due Torri. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less.
"I'll be in Rome the end of this month."
Campo de' Fiori/Navona is the most popular area to stay in Rome. October is super high season in Rome. Unless you get lucky and find a last minute cancellation, I would be very surprised if you could find anything in this price range, let alone anything "good." I love staying in this area, but there aren't many hotels that I would classify as good. The closer you get to the center, the smaller the rooms get.
Coach class airfares have been remarkably low this season. Lower-priced rooms have been in serious demand. People do cancel late, it can pay to keep checking.
I just checked the last week of October on Booking. Only two hotels came up with availability, neither well rated. I wouldn't trust Booking, though. I would contact the hotel directly.
Might want to take a shot at Hotel Campo de' Fiori, which is right at the piazza:

They also have apartments they've bought over the years, many that overlook the market. Short notice might be tough, however. We stayed in one of their tiny apartments in March that cost around $85/night and was wonderful.
Good luck!
(Almost) everything in Rome is close...I (personally) wouldn't get fixated on one neighborhood over another since they're probably less than .5 mile apart and everything is walkable. The downsides of staying in the most popular areas are noise and cost. You can always do a Google Street View of any surrounding area to check out what it looks like if you're not familiar with the neighborhood.
Are you coming now? When Rome finally cooled off? Now may be a good time to enjoy Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Navona!
I wish I could convey the majesty of this beautiful city that lies outside the seesaw of the center. Its glory actually increases in the radius. I didn't know it either until I moved here. Amazing!
Yes I am coming at the end of October and am very excited. Haven't found a hotel in the area you spoke about but am trying. If I can't find one I do have a reservation at a lovely hotel in Trastevere.
I'd go to Trastevere.
Thank you Sandra I probably will.
Condotti Inn....great location, priced Right, immaculately clean...inn keepers Pino and Mari great folks...call them directly...
Also can recommend the Pensione Barrett overlooking the Largo Argentina ruins. It fits within your budget and is a few minutes walk from the Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona area. We just stayed there in September and like it a lot.
I've stayed in Smeraldo in Rome as part of a RS tour and then on my own. It's better than adequate and very convenient. My room was above a bakery--great smells early in the morning. Cj
