Good day trip from Rome

Hello, my family and I are trying to decide what would be a good day trip from Rome. We will be in Rome for 7 days which is the last part of our vacation. At this point in our trip, we would have already visited Florence, Pisa, Naples/Pompeii & we are coming from Venice. The day we have open is a Monday, so the Antica ruins are out since they are closed that day. We were considering Civita di Bagnoregio but I’ve read that it’s difficult to get to without a car and I don’t really want to rent one. Any ideas would be very helpful. My family is really into anything so small villages, museums, and churches are always open. Thank you.

Raymond,

Civita di Bagnoregio would indeed be a bit difficult to see on a day trip from Rome (although I suspect it's feasible), but you could consider visiting Orvieto instead. It's about one hour each way from Rome, and a beautiful Umbrian hill town with an interesting history.

While there you could tour St. Patrick's Well (an amazing engineering feat in its day), the Orvieto underground city and of course the magnificent Duomo with the Signorelli Frescoes. There are some nice restaurants there, and (IMO) that would be a wonderful place to consider for a day trip.

I agree with Ken. I'm in Orvieto now and it's an easy day trip from Rome. . . about 1.25 to 1.50 hours by train, the regionale which is not expensive. On arrival at the train station tabacchi, you can buy the Carta Unica (8-10 sights, depending on how you count them) plus a round-trip on the funicular/minibus to the Duomo or just the funicular/minibus ticket. The current price is 20 euro (17 for students and over 65) for the Carta Unica, which comes with a city map. There's a TI across the piazza from the Duomo too. From April through September the sights are open 7 days a week.

I agree with Orvieto as well. Also, because of high speed trains, both Florence or Naples would make an easy day trip too. Train from Rome to Florence is about 1.5 hour and Rome to Naples is about 1 hour. I hope this helps some.
