What would be the most convenient car rental location to avoid driving in city center congestion?
We will take a train up from Sorrento to Rome and then will be renting a car to drive up to Orvieto. Anyone familiar with the different rental locations in Rome?
I am thinking we will drop it off at the same location upon our return, so would be very helpful to be near a train station.

The rental location at Termini is easy to get to and from. Personally would take the train to Orvieto and then rent the car. However, no matter where you rent the car or plan to drop it, double check (triple check would not hurt) the open hours.

I agree with Frank as to taking the train to Orvieto. Where I disagree is where to pick up a rental if you do rent. I have rented and returned from the Termini area and the Tiburtina station area. Tiburtina is less crowded and much easier to escape the insanity of driving in Rome. Traffic (and ZTL’s) near Termini is congested and miserable.
