I know this is touristy but my teenage grandchildren want to do it. Is it easy to get one once we are there rather than booking though a company which I don't want to do. We are staying at Hotel Carlton Capri near the Grand Canal. When we were there in October we saw gondolas outside the hotel-Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal.
Thanks!

I believe you can just approach the gondoliers in person and make a plan with them. You might, instead, want to consider booking a lesson with RowVenice.org - your grandkids might get a kick out of learning to row themselves.
A gondola ride before sunset lasts 30 minutes and costs 80 € (per boat, not per person). The fares are fixed, any booking site will give 80 € to the Gondolier, send him a text with your name and pocket the difference. In return you'll be forced to take your ride even if you don't like that area or if it's raining.
if you're concerned, ask the front desk now or upon arrival
It’s dead easy. You chat up the idle gondoliers, find one you like, and book. Flat fee for time per boat. The companies selling it are kinda circumventing the regulation, and taking a cut.
