gondola ride at night

Can you take a gondola ride at night or only during the daytime?

Depends on what you call at night. There are twilight and evening gondola rides available, and it’s a memorable way to see Venice, but you won’t find any really late in the evening or at times most would consider after bedtime.

In case this is important to you, the prices for gondola rides increase in the evening.

There are early evening gondola rides, and the price rises after 7 pm. I would suggest you take a ride on the back canals instead of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal is like a busy highway on water, and we watched gondolas struggling at times to avoid all the congestion. The back canals are peaceful and more romantic. You can take a vaporetto up the Grand Canal in the evening to have the experience of Venice at that time of day.

We did it in the early evening which was perfect because the lights on the buildings, bridges and restaurants reflecting on the Grand Canal made it look otherworldly. It seemed to me that the traffic on the Grand Canal was greatly reduced after dusk, so that it wasn't crowded. Some of those back canals are narrow, dark and smelly, so not quite as romantic.

A gondola ride costs 80 € (per boat) for a 30 minutes ride before sunset.

The price increases to 100 € for 35 minutes after sunset.

Walk around the back canals, find a gondolier that seems nice and ask him (or her if you are very lucky) about a late evening ride.

In October, we took a gondola ride about 11 P.M. It cost us 80 Euro and it lasted about an hour. Half was on the Grand Canal and half in the back canals. We personally liked the back canals better because it was dark, romantic and we were the only ones in the area.

I am pretty sure you can find gondoliers up until 11 pm at night, the price does increase for night time rides, the rides last about a half an hour, and are priced at 80-100 euros.

They also have gondolas to take you from one side of the “street” to the other for a few euros per person.
