Going to Nice after end of 13 days Italy do it my way

Greetings! My 14-year-old granddaughter and I are so excited about our upcoming trip with the Rick Steves group. Following the conclusion of this tour in Rome, we need to get ourselves to Nice, the starting point for exploration (we have reservations) of Provence, France. I am hoping for experienced perspective and advice on transportation modes. I see there are direct flights on Ryanair, Rome to Nice. or should we take a train from Rome, obviously a longer investment of time and more complications. Thanks in advance!

The train’s going to be an almost all-day affair, with transfers. It worked for us 6 years ago, but we arrived in Nice after dark, tired from the experience. Flying would be faster, and maybe not much pricier.

Thanks so much! Exactly what I was thinking. The consideration would be to enjoy views from the train, however, the hi-speed tends to blur things. My concern about flying is not seeing known-to-me airlines. Would I feel safe with those smaller airlines?

Our trains weren’t super high-speed. The closer you get to Nice, the slower the train speed. I frankly don’t recall being glued to the window for the scenery. It was countryside, along with the occasional graffiti on rail cars and structures near tracks that seems to be the bane of rail travel everywhere, but not necessarily postcard views the whole time. Not completely awful, but not completely life-changing stupendous.

RyanAir is a major discount airline, based in Ireland but with flights throughout Europe. We’ve used them, and while you won’t feel like you were treated like royalty, they get you to your destination, and the price is hopefully OK. For scenery, get a window seat, but if you’re above overcast clouds, that’s all you’ll see.

Nice is a very convenient base for exploring the Riviera coast (Menton, Monte Carlo, Antibes, Cannes, etc.) and for the nearby hill towns. It's not a good base for the area many of us think of as Provence (Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Avignon and the Luberon. Be sure the places you want to see are going to be practical day-trip destinations from Nice if that's how you hope to see them.

Good point and thanks for that suggestion. We are actually leaving Nice after three days and staying at Avignon and Aix for several days each to take advantage of the good tours out of those areas.

Thanks for your recommendation of Ryanair. I am now leaning in that direction.
