Going to Naples, Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Venice. Does it matter what airport I fly into?

So many books show itineraries starting in Rome, then going down to Naples before heading up to Florence. Why can't I start in Naples instead of backtracking?

If your flights work for you time wise and your pocketbook, go for it. But, you might want to consider flying into Venice and out of Rome if flying back to the US. Venice has O’dark thirty flights.

Naples is a smaller airport, so fewer flights and prices can be higher. Set up Google Flight
Alerts and research the prices to various airports. Good luck!

What Diane is saying is if you depart from Venice your only option may be to depart on an early morning flight requiring you to take a costly early morning water taxi to the airport. When checking airfare, fly in and out of Venice and Naples but also check Naples and Venice. If the flight from Venice requires you to be at the airport before 6a it may best to fly into Venice instead of out of Venice.

If you can (and if the price is right), fly into Venice (the airport is not near the city center) and return from either Naples or Rome.
Rome is by far the largest airport in Italy, so it has the most options, so returning from Rome might be more convenient price-wise.
So the perfect itinerary would be: Home-Venice-Florence-Cinque Terre-Naples-Rome-Home or, if flights are available and reasonably priced out of Naples, Venice-Florence-Cinque Terre-Rome-Naples.
