We are going from Florence to Naples in September. We want to stop for two nights in one of the hilly towns in Tuscany or Umbria but we won’t be driving. Which town would be the most accessible by train? Is returning to Florence to catch a train to Naples the most efficient? It seems like the fast trains only leave from either Florence or Rome.
Welcome to the forum!
Orvieto is on the train line
Beautiful Umbrian town with plenty to see and do

You may still need to change in Rome en route to Naples
I believe there is an IC train though that won’t require that
Check Trenitalia

Thank you for your reply. I just checked your link and googled Orvieto, amazing place!
And if we leave from Ravenna (not Florence I was assuming we’ll have to go through Florence), what time do we have to leave to make it to Orvieto afternoon? There seems to be many different ways to travel there. Sorry I’m not familiar with the Italian train system yet :)
To familiarize yourself with European train systems you can peruse the following website. It has a section for Italian trains as well.

To find out the times go to the Trenitalia website that Christine posted then enter:
from: RAVENNA
to: ORVIETO
date: DATE OF TRAVEL OF YOUR PREFERENCE
time: ENTER HOUR OF DEPARTURE as early as possible in the morning for example 02:00 to display all options for the day.
Most solutions will require a change in BOLOGNA and another change at FIRENZE SANTA MARIA NOVELLA (Florence main station)
Starting in Ravenna, you can make the journey to Naples easier, with fewer train changes, by taking the Frecciargento train down the coast before turning inland to Rome.
You could stop overnight night in the Umbrian hill town of Spoleto.

Then continue to Rome, changing there to the Frecce train to Naples.
Since there are no train changes/connections between Ravenna and Spoleto, this route is easier than the 2 or 3 needed to go from Ravenna to Orvieto via Bologna and Florence.
Edit: I now see this direct route is only for departures from Ravenna at 6:08 am or 16:50 in the afternoon. But the total time is 3.5 hours. Shortest time to Orvieto is 4h 50 minutes for morning departure. Afternoons have some 1-change departures with travel time 4.5 hours.
