going to italy for 24 days in july. Hotels/Villas suggestions for 6?

Hi
Going to italy for 24 days in July. Suggestions would be great for hotels/villas/other places to stay for a party of 6 (2 adults, 4 kids) would be greatly appreciated. Reasonable would be great but trying to stay away from 500E a night type of costs.

Driving the country so hitting a lot of major cities and using certain cities to jump off to one day trips. We are:

Starting in Milan,
then Lake Maggiorre or Como area,
Venice,
Bologna,
Rimini
Florence,
Cinqueterra (probably only for a night),
Roma

(*perhaps stay in small towns?)

Other recommendations welcome (genoa?, Turin? Bari?) or great drives (eg Amalfi Coast)
(Naples and Salerno area -- already set- famiglia)

Many thanks and much appreciated!!

We've used www.vrbo.com with great success but you need to do your homework on location etc. My friend liked the pictures and got a nice place in the wrong part in Paris

We use both VRBO.com and Homelidays.com to rent apts when we are in the EU. Have had fantastic luck.

Make sure that you get the address, Google map the location (to ensure that it is not on a noisy street, etc), and then turn on the "street view" and walk up and down the streets looking at the location.

It is best to find a place that has many good customer reviews, and that has been in the rental pool for awhile.

Remember in the EU the "1st floor" is actually the 2nd floor.
