Going to Italy again in October and finally seeing Venice!

In October I'm flying into Zurich to spend several days in the Alsace region of France, then I'll be taking the Bernina Express route across Switzerland to spend one night in Vareena, then going to Venice from October 19-22 and to Florence from the 22-25 before flying home. I'm so excited to finally be seeing Venice! And I adore Florence so much, so I'm really looking forward to that part of my trip.

Does anyone have any hotel suggestions for one night in Vareena? What about Venice? I thought about getting an Airbnb in Venice since it's 3 nights and it might be nice to spread out, do some laundry etc., but I'm open to any and all ideas. I'm not a fancy person, but I do like clean and bright.

Thanks!

I assume you mean Varenna on Lake Como? That is a lot of travel for only one night in Varenna. You will have to travel from Tirano, NE of Lake Como, to Varenna once you get off the Bernini Express train. You'll need to get on another train or hire a taxi.
After one night in Varenna you want to travel to Venice? You need at least one more night on Lake Como or skip Varenna.

I’m confused Suki. Are you saying I should go straight from Chur, where I’ll start my day on to Venice? I thought the route went through Vareena after Tirano, so it would be a nice place to stop for the evening and catch my breath.

We stayed at Prince Apartments in Venice and booked via booking.com
We were quite happy there, and they had a washer and DRYER on site (ask for the key). It is a quick walk from the aresenale vaporetto stop and we found the owner/ manager very attentive; we would stay there again.

I think Suki is unaware of your previous posts about wanting to do the Bernina Express and possibly stopping along the way to Milan and Florence. You can skip Varenna if you want as it is off-season and could be a bit chilly to enjoy what Lake Como is famous for. Tough call, but like I said, you have plenty of time to make a plan.

Everybody has their favorite Venice hotel. Definitely search Airbnb for something that suits you. Pensione Guerrato is an RS favorite that many here favor for lower price "unfancy" hotel with a good location near Rialto.

Edit. Going all the way from Chur to Venice on the Bernina Express in one day is likely to et you into Venice after sunset in late October. Maybe a stopover along the way is in order.

I was just in Venice for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Similar to your comment, I wanted to book an Airbnb for space and real laundry after 8 nights in 4 different hotels. The place I booked was pretty perfect for me. The place was bright, clean, and spacious (except for the small bathroom, and it was decorated with some personal taste, not just another IKEA AirBnB. The clinger was the location, which I didn't quite understand, and totally lucked out on. It's tucked off a busier route: go left and in 5 minutes you're at Rialto Bridge, right in the thick of it. But turn right and you're immediately in one of the less-touristed areas, where the paths and bridges and canals are all shorter, narrower, and windier, and it's just, somehow, magical.

Here's where I stayed

I also hired a guide for a 2-hour "orientation" on my first morning, and was glad I did. Found in the RS book, Elisabetta from 2guides4venice was great. The "orientation" wasn't on their online offering, but as soon as we met she somehow intuited what would be of interest to me, and filled the tour with facts and insights I found fascinating.

We have been to Venice 4 times and still feel like it is the most enchanting place on Earth, despite the crowds and sometimes flooded piazzas. Most of our visits included the July Feast of Rendentorre that celebrates the end of the Black Plague, which must be more meaningful now that we are opening up after Covid. Depending on your budget, I'd recommend the Locanda Ca dell Brocchi, where we stayed 20 years ago. We've stayed on the main island, on the Lido, and camped at Punta Sabbioni (the incredible campground (Marina) where we stayed is closed in October), and all seemed exceptionally clean--there is a reason people keep coming back, but my recommendation is still Ca dell Brocchi, because you get to really experience the opulence and grandeur that is so much a part of life in Venice at a descent price.

Be sure to put Burano, the lace island, on your agenda and then just wander around it. It is different from the place we visited in for the first time in 2001, when few tourists took the boat ride to the outer island. The colors of the houses are like the most gorgeous mixed bouquet, a change after the beige and corals of the other islands. A photo I took of a woman working on her boat in a Burano canal decorates my living room, its vivid lavenders, pinks, green and blues helped me through the gloomiest days of the lockdown.

Wishing you great weather and wonderful conversations with people who grew up around the lagoon. They have always been kind to us, with interesting stories and thoughts if you are willing to listen.

We stayed at Hotel Flora, close to St. Marco. Great location, lovely family owned hotel. Beautiful garden, free breakfast. Nice rooms. I’d stay again.

I’m a two time Venice visitor, and much more enjoyed staying in the Dorsoduro neighborhood over the time we stayed in Rialto. Rialto had the nicer B&B, but Dorsoduro was quiet, easier to get to things. This seems a paradox, but not navigating through everyone and their mother on the path from the train station to St. Marks via the Rialto was MUCH better. Getting to the big central sites from Dorsoduro was way easier and just more “evocative.”

I dunno if we will return to Venice (there’s a whole other Italy to explore), but I would stay in that neighborhood in a different place if/when I return.

I ended up booking an Airbnb in the Canneregio area. It had lots of good reviews and seemed close, but not too close to the tourist attractions. I know I’d like to see Murano and Burano, but other than that, I’ll have to start researching.

I need to find a hotel in Vareena, and then I’ll have all my lodging booked. For me, that’s the most stressful part of planning, so I can start the fun part of deciding what I want to see and do.

Oh my gosh, thank you Christine. I guess I’ve looked at so many new places in the past few days that I don’t think I would have noticed that if you hadn’t pointed it out!

KRS, are you planning to take the Bernina Express itself or just cover that route with the regional trains? If the former, consider doing a forum search on Bernina Express to see the suggestions many make of taking the regional train instead. Supposedly the same track, fewer people, and less costly. The Bernina Express has been on my bucket list for a while, but I've have been converted to the idea of the regional train instead. Apparently all we're losing out on is the panorama cars.

melrowgo, I will most likely take the regional trains since from everything I've read here, the view will be just as beautiful, the seats more or less as nice and it gives me more flexibility in scheduling and in case I decide to stop and wander around at any of the stops along the way.

I love that the RS forums provide so much helpful information. Thank you!
