Going to Bellagio- Como or Varenna?

We are traveling to Bellagio from Milan. Would anyone recommend going to Como and taking the long boat ride- this is what was recommended - or taking train to Varenna and then shorter ferry ride. We will be in Bellagio for two nights so we should have plenty of time for sightseeing. Also, any suggestions of things not to miss in the area?

My suggestion is to take the train to Varenna - walk down the hill to the ferry dock and take the short ride to Bellagio. If you want to on your second day there is a hop on - hop off ferry boat that will take you to 3 or 4 stops around the upper half of the lake. You can explore these smaller towns have lunch and hop back on.

I second Shelley's comments, and book early so you get the Hotel of your choice.the Village of Varenna is worth at least a half a day or more.

I agree. We took this trip a couple of weeks ago. The train from Milan to Varenna, and the ferry from there to Bellagio, is an easy way to do the travel. Varenna is quite pretty.

In 2010 we stayed in Como and made a day trip to Bellagio on the ferry. It took 2 hrs. to Bellagio from Como and was very relaxing. Last year we stayed in Varenna right at the dock in the Hotel Olivedo making the trip to Bellagio about 30 minutes. I suppose it could be 6 of one and a half dozen of another. Make sure you spend time in Varenna, which has exponentially fewer tourists than Bellagio. Buon viaggio,
