Can anyone recommend specific restaurants in Rome and Florence where you have had a good experience dining gluten-free? Thank you!
Celiacs is fairly common in Italy. You may want to check out sites like http://www.celiactravel.com/, they have translated cards you can take into restaurants to help you out.
Good luck with that. I never saw a menu with a gluten-free alternative.
I find it very easy to eat gluten-free in Italy without going to special restaurants.
Risotto, salad, grilled meat, chicken or fish; most vegetable dishes, are all gluten free.
Of course you would avoid bread, pizza, pasta, gnocchi, and (unfortunately) many soups.
Hi Andrea. I haven't been to Rome and Florence, but when I traveled to Italy last year (a RS tour and 5 days on my own split between Venice and Milan), I had no problems at all. Many restaurants had GF pasta. I used the translation cards that have already been suggested. Celiac is pronounced "che lee' a co". Pharmacies in Italy should have gluten free products, look for larger pharmacies.
For Gelato, look at the GROM website; http://www.grom.it/eng/celiachia.php
They even have Gluten free cones for the Gelato. There were some other shops that also had GF cones and GF Gelato. The website lists one location in Florence but none in Rome. I did ask every gelato shop that I visited, some had GF gelato and others did not. Grom is pricey, but heavenly.
Have a great trip.
