Gluten Free in Italy??

So one of the kids requires a gluten free diet. Has anyone had experience traveling italy with these requirements? This is not a strict diet due to celiac's but she sticks to it pretty religiously due to stomach issues if not.

Are we better to simply stick to veggies fruits and meats or will we findgluten free items as we find here in the US stores and restaurants menus?

Luckily I already saw a post regarding gluten free gelato/cones in a couple areas!!

Lots of discussion on this, general agreement that eating "senza glutine" is easy in Italy. Just ask your waiter for recommendations. If breakfast is included with your hotel, email them ahead of time to ask for options.

Grocery stores and pharmacies have special sections for gluten-free products.

There are tons of coeliacs in Italy and gluten free food is widely available. Many restaurants will be able to accommodate your needs. Just say: "senza glutine".

I have seen restaurants that advertise gluten-free menus, but any restaurant should be okay. A friend has found gluten-free pasta that he says is okay, but he's Austrian.

This New York Times article confirms that Italy is very gluten-aware, and has lots of details as well as some useful links at the end: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/29/travel/gluten-free-dining-in-italy.html?ref=travel

(I was fascinated when I was there to see that pharmacies stocked gluten-free foods, and the article finally explained the reason to me).

Here are some earlier threads on the subject:

I am also gluten intolerant and there are many Italian meat and vegetable dishes that don't include pasta, especially in the north. I also always bring a loaf of gf bread and some peanut butter with me in my suitcase for emergencies! Good luck and have a fun trip.
