Gluten free food on tours

Hi!
I was wondering how someone that has gone on a Rick Steves tour has fared if they are gluten intolerant? We went to Italy last spring on our own and I didn’t have any trouble finding gluten free options- in fact they have some of the best gluten free food I’ve ever had! I was curious if it was doable on a tour where some of the food is already included in the price of the tour. Thanks so much!

Just tell the guide at the 1st meeting of your situation and the guide will advise the group dinner restaurants of your needs.

You should call the RS Tour Dept. and ask about the food policy, as I was told during my 2017 tour that a less accomodating policy was being considered. Worst case, you might need to order some gluten free courses on your own tab at group dinners.

The above advice is perfect. Let the RS office know ahead of time what your dietary needs are. Then when you meet your guide, remind them of that fact. I have only done one RS tour, but it was exceptional at meeting my needs as well as those of another guest who was gluten intolerant.

We were on a Best of Italy tour and one of our tour buddies had celiac disease. Our guide made every effort to notify the restaurant or hotel kitchen and special dishes were provided. Our guide always came by their table and checked that all was well when substitutes were made. I found myself envying the risottos dishes provided when pasta was on the menu. BTW the pasta dishes were delicious too but I also wanted to try the risottos.
