My family and I are traveling to Rome, Tuscany and Cinque Terra this summer. Our family is glueten free and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a guidebook or iPhone app that would help us find good restaurants in Italy? Thanks
Mark
I have a few gluten intolerant members in my family in Italy (I don't think that condition existed back in the days when I lived there, it must be another pharmaceutical industry invention, like "hyperactive bladder"). Maybe I'll ask, but otherwise simply avoid ordering pasta at restaurants. For sure supermarkets are full of gluten free products (sometimes I think there is an epidemic of gluten intolerance in Italy).
Thanks. I recently read an article that said that Italy was the number one country in Europe with gluten intolerances and I thought I would be able to find something a little easier. Based on my last post that I failed to proof read prior to sending, Apple's auto spelling correction on my Ipad is a little ignorant roo.
Eating gluten-free in Italy is pretty easy. Just tell the waiter you must eat "senza gluten" and they will help you with choices. There is gluten-free pizza and gelato. You can also buy gluten-free products and snacks at the pharmacy (farmacia).
We were staying in a Bed and Breakfast south of Rome with a family that had a gluten free son. Our host often receives requests for gluten free.
I assume traveling gluten free is often seen in Italy. You should be able to travel in this manner.
I doubt that Italy is #1 in terms of residents who are gluten-intolerant. Celiac disease is more commenin northern Europeans, particularly in the Uk. Bit Italy may well bethe #1 country interms of eating gluten-free. I certainly find it easier there than elsewhere,as it s easy to identify what to avoid: nbread in all forms, including bruschetta, crostini, piadini, pizza, and pasta. Instead, you have a wide choiceofwonderful grilled meats and fish, salads, antipasti, and risotto and polenta.
All children in Italy are tested for the conditions so it is well recognised and catered for.
