Global Positioning Device (GPS)

Will the GPS on an iPhone work in Italy? We also have a Garmin GPS device, should we use that instead? How do you get a GPS map for Italy? Thanks...Pam

The GPS on your iphone will work - but I'm pretty certain you will rack up large data charges. Check with you iphone carrier to make certain before you use it. I have a Garmin that has European maps on it but not all have them. I think you can add them but the cost may be pretty high.
Depending on where you are driving, you might be fine without GPS. The first number of trips we drove in Italy and other countries were before GPS was widely used and we did fine. Get a good Michelin or other map and use it. I have also downloaded and copied the step by step driving directions from Via Michelin with good results.

The data on your IPhone will be expensive. We are heading to Scotland in a couple of weeks, we are renting a car. I've purchased a map of the UK directly from the Garmin website. This allows me to plot the hotels / bnbs that we are staying at ahead of time - my suggestion purchase a map for the Garmin.

The only place we will be renting a car is for Tuscany. Is there a place to find a good Tuscany map? Sounds like that's what we need. Pam

Amazon has a Michelin map with very good reviews and reportedly lots of detail.

you can also get a Italian Sim card for your iPhone that has data and voice, then use your map app for GPS. Plans are cheap. TIM has great prices.
