My daughter and I made reservations at the convent, ALBERGO GIUSTI – Suore di Sant' Anna on Via Gusti 5. I am now concerned about the safety of this area due to a posting on the Graffiti wall about the area near the train station, right across from Santa Maria Maggorie. According to the vacationer, it was filthy and unsafe. It appears that the convent is about 1500 feet from Santa Maggiore. Could anyone confirm this information? I am ready to look for another place. Thank you.
I stayed at a hostel 2 blocks from termini and never felt scared. According to Ricks book he states that lots of people feel that this area is creepy but he also says that it is safe and it doesn't bother him. I had no proplems and thought the area was great because it was close to the subway and the trains. It's up to you but if you want to maybe consider someplace else, I can give you a website to contact. www.cross-pollinate.com this is a bed and breakfast booking service for Rome, Venice and Florence that is owned and operated by an American family living in Rome. They are very reasonable and have many different accommodations. I love staying with them. They also have a great boutique hotel/hostel/art space call the Beehive (recommended by Rick and thats where I stayed near Termini) It's listed in his book. I'm not sure of the website but if you type in Beehive it will come up saying something about Rome. Check out both of these and have fun!!!
Via Giusti is not what i consider near Termini..and it's just off my favorite Rome street, Via Merulana, the one with TREES that goes from Santa Maggiore to San Giovanni Laterno..Via Giusti is in the middle, just a little side street, two blocks from where we stayed...and i'm quite sure i popped into Santa Anna church during one of my walks. It's a lovely neighborhood..and eventually i'll find my bus map to suggest which one will get you almost to the doorstep...PS we were there in May so this is fairly up to date advice.
I did a general response this morning...and still can't find my bus map ...but the area you chose is perfect!!!...and not at all " filthy and unsafe"...Regina
Janet - prior to moving to the Prati area I looked at an apartment on Via Gusti. It's a working class neighborhood but you will be safe there. You're about two blocks from the Vittorio Emanuele metro station and yes, about 1,500 - 1,800 feet from Santa Maria Maggiore.
Unfortunately MUCH of Rome is covered in graffiti, including some monuments and yes, even churches. We have a new mayor - maybe he will start addressing this issue. Major crimes are NOT an issue here, yet vandalism and petty theft seem to be of most concern. That said, you will be safe in this area. I've had friends stay here and there are many hostels just north and west of your location so younger folks are out and about.
Ciao,
